Rocky is a 1976 American boxing film co-written, produced, and directed by Sylvester Stallone. The film stars Stallone as Rocky Balboa, a struggling club fighter from an Italian-American neighborhood of Philadelphia trying to get by on his daily dishwashing job. The first installment in the Rocky film series, the eponymous lead character goes on to become World Heavyweight Champion through perseverance and determination against all odds. Balboa's romantic rival turns out to be his childhood friend Tommy "the machine" Gunn, who has had more success as an amateur boxer than he had as a professional due to his relentless drive for perfection. Venture capitalist John G. Avildsen was the original director, but was fired by Stallone, who had started as a bit actor in Avildsen's first film, "Joe" (1970). Stallone eventually became the first person to win an Academy Award for writing, directing and starring in the same film. "Rocky" is considered one of the greatest sports films ever made, with most of its success stemming from a combination of Stallone's screenplay and his realistic direction. The film is #16 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years…100 Thrills" list of movies. At the Church of the Universe, Adriana attends a wedding where she meets Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Tommy Gunn (Burgess Meredith). He is there to watch his nephew Adrian (Burt Young), who is to fight in his first match. Adrian loses to his rival, but Rocky discovers that he has killed the opponent's father. The opponent's brother punches Rocky for revenge, and he recovers with the help of Adrian and Tommy. Rocky later visits Adrian at his home and gives him motivational advice and encouragement for battle, much to the chagrin of Adrian's mother Paulie (Ann Gunzinger). Rocky soon discovers that the fight was fixed by Dolf Lundgren, Adrian's opponent's manager. Rocky gets Adrian a shot at Duke on national television, where he is overwhelmed and humiliated by Duke's more experienced and stronger punches, and loses the match. Rocky visits his trainer Mickey (Burgess Meredith) in prison to cheer him up. At the gym, Rocky rescues an amateur boxer from roughnecks who trash his locker room while Mickey trains him; the boy is played by Stallone's real-life son Sage (Sage Stallone), although he did not receive credit until 2006 on DVD releases. Adrian fights Duke for a rematch with the support of Rocky and Paulie. Duke secretly swears revenge after the match. Moments after the fight, Rocky celebrates with Adrian, until they are approached by one of Duke's henchmen, who challenges Rocky to a street fight since he has "a lot of money" on him. Mickey joins Rocky in training for the street fight, but he soon collapses from heart problems. Before the rematch against Duke, Adrian gives birth to a son at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. On New Year's Eve, Rocky visits Mickey in the hospital and wishes him a speedy recovery and leaves before he can see Paulie and her son (she had recently given birth to his child). cfa1e77820
